Hello Pack 850! I hope you are all well and excited for the Cub Scouts season! I’m your Cubmaster Jose Dalprat, and you can reach me by email at jdalprat@gmail.com or by phone at 714-362-7548. This is my third year in this position and I have three sons in the pack, Ilan is an AOL, Ezra is a Bear, and Avner is a Tiger. Please let me know if you have any questions and please share this with your friends who want to join Cub Scouts.
I’ll keep the intro brief as this is intended to be a comprehensive introduction to our year! Cub Scouts Pack 850 is chartered by the Villa Park Rotary. We are part of the Canyons district of the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. We have programs available for boys and girls from grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Dues are $200 for the year.
Our next pack meeting will be virtual on Zoom on Thursday, October 29th at 7pm. This will be our Halloween party and we will have a virtual costume contest and pumpkin carving contest. More info coming soon.
We know this has been a challenging year for all and I am sure you all have questions about this year’s program. Here are our plans for the year:
1. All activities will continue at the den level, safely meeting outdoors with mask wearing and social distancing.
2. All Pack meetings will be virtual until public health guidelines change regarding large group gatherings.
3. Camping will be done at the den level. More info coming soon.
4. Monthly Pack hikes will be scheduled with staggered start times to allow for social distancing.
5. We will be adding outdoor events throughout the year: Bike Rodeo, Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (BB guns, archery, climbing wall, zipline)
Thanks,
Jose

Major Events
Pack 850 has several major events each year that are special as compared to our typical pack meetings. We will put on these events in accordance with local public health guidance.
Pinewood Derby. Sunday, January 17. The scouts will build and decorate their own pine car racers to race on our custom built race track! This is one of the premier events on our calendar and not to be missed! Cars will be distributed in December. Parents and siblings can compete too!
Blue and Gold Banquet. Sunday, February 28. The Blue and Gold Banquet is the celebration of Scouting. It is an event where we can invite the important people in our lives to come and celebrate our Cub Scouts. This is also the event where we say good bye to our Arrow of Light den (5th graders) as they bridge over to Boy Scouts!
Scout O Rama. May 2021. Oak Canyon Park. The Scout O Rama is an event put on by the Orange County Council of the BSA. Every Pack and Troop sets up a booth with a special activity. It is truly a carnival of scouting! It is not just for scouts! Friends and siblings can join the fun too with activities including shooting, riding, cooking, eating, boating, building, coloring and more. Pack 850 will have a booth too! In years past we’ve had kid-powered electricity and target shooting.
Pack Picnic and Bridging Ceremony. June 2021. This is a picnic where the scouts will be bridging up to their next rank! It’s a lot of fun and a great photo opportunity.
Fundraising
Two major fundraisers sponsored by the Orange County BSA Council plus other fundraisers as needed. Pack 850 chooses to keep our costs as low as possible for our families and believes that having our boys and girls learn to go out and sell is a useful developmental tool for them.
Fall – Popcorn Sales
Popcorn sales. Awesome prizes for high-sellers and participants will get a patch.
The scouts are required to participate! Here are two ways to participate:
$100 in individual orders.
Pay a $100 buyout fee.
Popcorn sales run now through October 20. Thank you to Layra Alcala-Dalprat for running this operation.
Spring – Camp Card Sales
In the spring we will sell coupon cards which include admission to Scout-O-Rama, the Orange County BSA’s premier carnival of scouting. Cards typically run $10 and include 2 for 1 deals to local restaurants, grocery stores, and retailers.
Community Service
Pack 850 is involved in our community! We need a community service chair. Typically the role of this parent is to communicate with the various organizations that we work with for outreach programs. Here are the programs we plan to help with this year.
Saturday, November 7: Day of Service. Canned food collection to support Second Harvest Food Bank.
Saturday, April 2021: Arbor Day. We will join the City of Orange to plant trees!
Camping
Pack 850 loves to Camp! We will be camping at the den level this year. Specific details will be made available soon.
Adult Volunteering
Whereas the Boy Scouts is led by the scouts themselves, the Cub Scouts are led by you! Our job is to teach our boys and girls as many skills as we can to prepare them for the next step in their scouting adventure. The best way to do this is to: Be Informed, Be Involved and Be Prepared!
Planning Meeting The simplest way to be involved is to attend the monthly pack planning meetings. These are held at 7pm on the first Thursday of the month via Zoom. Here we set our plans for our activities for the next month. This is a good way to be “in the know” and to share good ideas that you may have.
Youth Protection Training We are requiring ALL parents to register with the BSA and take the Youth Protection Training. This is a quick 90 minute training that informs you of the rules of the BSA so we can KEEP OUR BOYS AND GIRLS SAFE. No excuses not to do this, you can even take it on your phone!
