Cubmaster’s Report Sept 2017

Now that school has been back in session for a couple weeks, I suppose it is time to kick of the Cub Scouts season! I’ll keep the intro brief as this is intended to be a comprehensive introduction to our year! Cub Scouts Pack 850 is chartered by the Villa Park Rotary and meets at Cerro Villa Middle School or our alternate site Oakridge School. We are part of the Canyons district of the Orange County Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

We have programs available for boys from grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Dues are $99 for the year.
I’m your Cubmaster Tom Schroeder and as usual you can reach me by email at tom.schroeder@gmail.com or by phone at 714-514-4697. Let me know if you have questions! PLEASE, share this with your friends who want to join Cub Scouts. There is a lot of information of what the Cub Scouts are about online but having the entire calendar for the year in one location is hard to find.

Our first meeting is on Thursday, September 21 at Oakridge School in Orange! We will have sign ups at the event. There will be an opportunity for the parents of each grade level to get together and go over their scheduel for the year and to meet each other if new. There will also be an activity for the boys that will help them to earn a pin or belt loop as well!

We will also try to have one sign up event held earlier in the week next week, to be announced later this week.

-Tom

Major Events
Pack 850 has several major events each year that are special as compared to our typical pack meetings.
Pinecar Derby. January 21. The boys will build and decorate their own pine car racers to race on our custom built race track! This is one of the premier events on our calendar and not to be missed! Cars will be distributed in December. Parents and siblings can compete too! We need a Pinewood Derby chairperson!
Blue and Gold Banquet. Sunday, February 25. The Blue and Gold Banquet is the celebration of Scouting. It is a pot luck event where we can invite the important people in our lives to come and celebrate our Cub Scouts. This is also the event where we say good bye to our Arrow of Light den (5th graders) as they bridge over to Boy Scouts! We need a Blue & Gold Banquet Chairperson!
Scout O Rama. Saturday, May 12. Oak Canyon Park in Silverado. The Scout O Rama is an event put on by the Orange County Council of the BSA. Every Pack and Troop sets up a booth where to create a special activity. It is truly a carnival of scouting! It is not just for scouts! Friends and siblings can join the fun too with activities including shooting, riding, cooking, eating, boating, building, coloring and more. Pack 850 will have a booth too! In years past we’ve had kid-powered electricity and target shooting. We need a Scout-O-Rama booth chairperson!
Pack Picnic and Bridging Ceremony. Saturday, June 23. This is a potluck picnic where the boys will be bridging up to their next rank! It’s a lot of fun and a great photo opportunity. The last two years have been held at Oakridge School.
Fundraising
Two major fundraisers sponsored by the Orange County BSA Council plus other fundraisers as needed. Pack 850 chooses to keep our costs as low as possible for our families and believes that having our boys learn to go out and sell is a useful developmental tool for them.
Fall – Popcorn Sales
Popcorn sales at the store begin this weekend with spots available on September 16-17, 23-24, 30-Oct 1.
Naturally cool prizes are available for high-sellers and participants will get a patch. Prizes here.
Winning a prize is not far-fetched. Last year one of our scouts earned a Nintendo Switch!
Sign up here:
The boys are required to to participate! Here are three ways to participate.
  1. $100 in individual in person orders. Order Form Click Here
  2. $100 in individual online orders. Instructions HERE
  3. Work 2 hours at a booth shift (sign up sheet above)
  4. Pay a $50 buyout fee.
Popcorn sales run now through October 16.
Thank you to Rich and Dana Keller for running this operation. We’ll send a photo after the popcorn arrives so you can get a true sense of the sacrifice they are making.
Spring – Camp Card Sales
In the spring we will sell coupon cards which include admission to Scout-O-Rama, the Orange County BSA’s premier carnival of scouting. Cards typically run $10 and include 2 for 1 deals to local restaurants, grocery stores, and retailers.
We need a Scout-o-Rama fundraising chair! Please contact Wendy Ross to volunteer.
Community Service
Pack 850 is involved in our community! We need a community service chair. Typically the role of this parent is to communicate with the various organizations that we will work with for outreach programs. Here are the programs we plan to help with this year.
Saturday, September 16 at 9 AM: Coastal Cleanup – Hart Park in Orange. We will help to clean up the Santiago Creek where it runs through Hart Park.
Saturday, November 4: Scouting for Food. Canned food collection to support Second Harvest Food Bank.
Saturday, April 28 (tentative): Arbor Day. We will join the City of Orange to plant trees!
Saturday, May 26 at 7:30 AM: Flags at Fairhaven. We will place flags at the grave sites of service members at Fairhaven Memorial Park in Santa Ana. This event is sponsored by Boy Scout Troop 28.
Camping
Pack 850 loves to Camp! We will have 4 camping trips this year. Two have already been planned! Pack 850 brings the food and cooking gear. You need to bring your sleeping bag, tent and hiking supplies!
Specific details will be made available at the pack meeting. Bring your credit card to reserve your spot!
September 29-October 1: Boulder Basin Campground in Idyllwild. Save the Date!
November 3-5: San Clemente State Beach! Reserve your spot today!
Winter 2018: Date TBD. BSA Camp Site.
Spring 2018: Date TBD. Point Mugu!
Adult Volunteering
Whereas the Boy Scouts is led by the boys themselves, the Cub Scouts are led by you! Our job is to teach our boys as many skills as we can to prepare them for the next step in their scouting adventure. The best way to do this is to:
Be Informed, Be Involved and Be Prepared!
Planning Meeting
The simplest way to be involved is to attend the monthly pack planning meetings. These are held at 7pm on the first Thursday of the month, typically at the Marie Callendar’s on Katella in Orange. Here we set our plans for our activities for the next month. This is a good way to be “in the know” and to share good ideas that you may have.
Youth Protection Training
We are requiring ALL parents to take the Youth Protection Training. This is a quick 30 minute training that informs you of the rules of the BSA so we can KEEP OUR BOYS SAFE. No excuses not to do this, you can even take it on your phone!
Other Important Training Opportunities
As one of the conditions of our insurance, we need our parents to be trained. Its not often that these are nearby so here are the best upcoming opportunities.
October 21, 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM: University of Scouting. Santiago Canyon College. $25. This is a great opportunity in how to be trained in a leadership role such as cub master, den leader, or in other areas such as first aid, religious awards, helping special needs scouts, fundraising, etc.
November 11, 8:30 AM to 4 PM: Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS & OWL). Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center. $25. Basic training for Scout Masters, Assistant Scout Masters, and Webelos Leaders. This is a requirement to be a leader in the Boy Scouts and is recommended primarily for parents of older boys (4th or 5th grade).
December 16, 8:30 AM to 4 PM: BALOO Training. Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center. $25. BALOO is Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation. BALOO prepares pack leaders to plan and carry out outdoor experiences. BSA requires BALOO trained adults for any pack camping trip.
